About this rug

Red and rose flower heads give this remarkable rug its dense lattice. On a near-black burgundy field, a dense lattice of graceful red and rose flower heads, leaves and cream rosettes repeats the length of the runner. There is no central medallion, only the continuous all-over pattern. The main border is cream, carrying stepped motifs in rust, red, brown and green. Red guard stripes, one with a fine scroll in blue and red, frame this wide band on either side. The pile is full over the face and the borders. The near-black field gives the bright border a sharp contrast to stand against. At 3'11" by 8'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Hamedan is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This runner has that long format and a field filled edge to edge with one repeating pattern. Its wide cream border, set with large stepped motifs, stands out against the near-black field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
