Red and orange motifs in rows fill the indigo field of this lovely rug. Rows of small red and orange motifs fill the indigo field. The field has no medallion, and the rows run down the whole length. Cream makes up the main border, which holds angular red and blue figures and a few teal strokes. Narrow guard stripes flank it, one a rose-brown band with small black dots and one plain red. The pile is low in patches through the field, where the foundation shows in pale spots. The charming red and orange motifs run the length of this runner, suited to a narrow passage. At 3'3" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps the all-over layout, with the repeat carried down the full length. Its motifs are small and angular, in red and orange against the indigo ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
