About this rug

Tiny cream and red diamonds are scattered over the navy field of this charming rug. Four large stepped diamond medallions in deep red run down the center of the navy field. Each medallion holds ochre chevrons and small geometric motifs within a serrated outline. Tiny cream and red diamonds are scattered over the navy between them. A gorgeous cream main border displays angular hooked figures in navy, rust and orange. Narrow guard stripes in deep red with small triangles run along the field. Small white flecks show over the face, in the field and in the border. It suits a long passage, and the dark ground sets off the red diamonds. At 3'7" by 12'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region rather than for export catalogs. This runner keeps that vocabulary in its stacked diamonds, red against navy. The border carries angular hooks rather than flowers, and a cream band encloses the dark field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
