About this rug

Flowers in red, blue and cream fill the two navy ends of this remarkable rug. Navy makes the ground of this runner, and a long red medallion with stepped sides runs through its middle, pointed at both ends. Small arrow-shaped pendants rise from each point, and a splendid cream star sits at the core among blue flowers and hooked leaf forms. The two navy ends carry the same flowers in red, blue and cream. A medium blue main border circles the field with graceful rust rosettes, scrolling vines and cream flower heads, beyond a cream guard stripe and a narrow stepped red line. The red of the medallion moves between lighter and deeper tones. It brings red against navy to a long space, and the lighter blue border eases the change between them. At 4'2" by 12'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are typical, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This one keeps to that plan. Its stepped red medallion and angular flower forms are the geometric side of Zanjan, and the long shape makes the most of the length. The curling vines in the border give it a lighter touch.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
