About this rug

Tan medallions above and below a red diamond make this a remarkable rug. Navy sets the ground, and a column of medallions runs down it. A red diamond with a brown core holds the center, with a tan medallion above and below and a tan pendant at each end. Thin red vines carry small flowers, rosettes and buds across the navy between them. Beautiful red and cream corner pieces with sawtooth edges close each end of the field. The main border is red, with lovely cream flowers on a branching vine of blue gray and brown stems. Narrow guard stripes of tiny crosses and leaves run on both sides of it. It anchors a space with red and navy at full strength, while the tan medallions soften the contrast. At 4'5" by 10'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nahavand rugs

The Battle of Nahavand in 642, fought between Arab and Sasanian forces, was a major turning point in Persian history. The Arab commander pretended to be defeated and withdrew, and the Sasanian army left its position to pursue him. Nahavand lies south of Hamedan in western Persia. Its village weaving follows the regional pattern of geometric drawing built around a central medallion, and the rugs were made for everyday use in local houses. This runner keeps that pattern and stretches it. The red diamond sits in the middle, and the tan shapes on either side carry the design along the length. The palette is the district’s own, madder red and dark blue, with tan as a further note.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
