About this rug

Small boteh in red and rust with tan centers run in close rows on this lovely rug. Small boteh in red and rust with tan centers run in close rows across a navy field, all pointing the same way, leaving the navy as a fine grid. The rows run unbroken from end to end, with no medallion or corner pieces. The wide deep red main border carries a stepped, angular vine set with small checkered diamonds in gold and black. One end carries an extra band of stepped figures in pink, tan and teal. Narrow guards of teal zigzag and gold diamonds run along the outer edge. Pale streaks of foundation show where the field pile has worn low, while the border pile stays fuller. The tan boteh centers brighten the dark ground, forming a band of navy and red for a narrow space. At 4'2" by 12'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names. The shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This rug holds to the all-over plan but swaps the flowers for small boteh. Its palette is bolder than the region’s restraint, with navy and deep red at full strength.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
