About this rug

Cross-shaped medallions and octagonal panels make this a lovely rug. Over a navy field, five figures run down the center: three cross-shaped medallions in red and camel alternate with two octagonal panels. Each cross-shaped medallion has a hexagonal center in red, cream and camel, and each panel holds a small flower on a red ground. Small red rosettes and bird figures fill the navy ground around them. A deep red main border carries hooked forms in blue, orange and camel, set between camel bands with slanted leaves. Fine guard stripes of red and cream dots edge each band. Full pile covers the rug, apart from a few low specks in the navy ground. Red and camel figures warm the navy field, fitting a long, narrow space. At 4'5" by 10'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This rug keeps that stepped outline in its central column and the hooked forms in its border. The red and camel figures stand out hard against the navy, and small bird figures stand in the field beside the octagonal panels.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
