A column of five stepped medallions in deep red, gold and teal runs down the navy field of this lovely rug. The navy field holds a column of five stepped medallions in deep red, gold and teal, with small birds filling the spaces between. Each medallion centers on a star shape within a notched cross form. No corner pieces break the pattern; the motifs run straight to the ends. The beautiful main border is red, carrying small rosettes and lozenges in navy, cream and green, with a gold band of small flowers inside it. The pile is full, with a scatter of white flecks over the navy. It suits a long hall, and the indigo ground sets off the bright red figures. At 3'2" by 11'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Azerbaijan rugs
The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. They spent the winter near sea level on the Moghan steppe and the summer about 160 kilometers south, in the high pastures of the Savalan range. Persian Azerbaijan covers the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region rather than for export catalogs. This runner keeps that vocabulary in its stepped cross medallions and stiff birds set against the dark ground. The medallions have red, teal and gold cores and stand in a column of five.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
