About this rug

Delightful hooked red medallions edged in cream run in a column down the navy field. A navy field carries a column of red medallions, each hooked and edged in cream around a small rosette, the flower seen from above. Splendid red and cream stars sit between them, and hooked squares, diamonds and leaf shapes in red, rose and brown fill the ground. A small round medallion turns each corner. Lovely brown and cream tendrils and little flower heads wander through the red main border, set between navy guard stripes that hold red blossoms and a string of diamonds. The pile is full all the way down the runner. It brings a strong red and navy to a hall, and the cream lines give the dark ground some air. At 3'7" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Borujerd rugs

Borujerd lies in Lorestan, the home of the Luristan Bronzes, which date from the turbulent years of about 700 to 625 BCE. Borujerd sits in the Zagros foothills of western Persia, in Lorestan, and the weaving there carries both village and tribal character. It leans toward the tribal side: its drawing is geometric, with stars, squares and hooked shapes set down a narrow field in straight, angular lines. The reds and blues come from the same madder and indigo the whole region used, and here they sit at full strength against the dark ground. Rugs from this area were made to be used hard, so a hall runner is a fitting place for one.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
