About this rug

Square red medallions with cream edging sit inside the orange forms of this amazing rug. Across a navy field, large orange hooked forms interlock in a column down the length. Two square red medallions with cream edging sit at the center of the orange, each holding a dark brown star motif. Small trees and tiny white birds stand on the navy between the forms. The beautiful camel main border carries small rosettes in rust, red and cream. Inside it, a red stripe with a stepped zigzag line runs between narrow dark brown stripes. Pile is full over the face. The navy ground sets off the warm orange in a bold, simple line. At 3'1" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This runner shows that geometry in its hooked orange forms and two square medallions, set in strong contrast against the navy. The pattern steps down the length in one column.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
