About this rug

Bands of diamonds, zigzag lines and small rosettes make this a delightful rug. Vertical bands run the full length of the rug on a navy and brown ground. A navy band on the left holds rows of copper and dark brown diamonds, while the bands beside it carry zigzag lines and small rosettes in copper and cream. There is no central medallion, only this asymmetric arrangement of distinct bands. A band of zigzags and rosettes in dark brown and copper closes both short ends, and a narrow cream stripe with small blue squares separates the bands. The pile is dense and full across every band. It holds a strong graphic line in a narrow space, the deep blue ground cooling the warm rust drawing. At 2'11" by 8'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. In Fars the men shear the sheep in spring or autumn and build the loom, a horizontal frame placed on the ground, while the women spin the yarn. Rugs sold under the name Shiraz were woven by tribal and village weavers around the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Geometric and often asymmetric drawing is the rule, with small stylized animals and birds turning up in the field. No two are laid out in quite the same way. This runner retains that angular character in its stepped diamonds and hard zigzag lines. Instead of a single centered focus, the layout divides the ground into separate vertical columns of pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
