About this rug

Dark rosettes and curling vines in navy and brown fill the coral red border of this amazing rug. Across a deep indigo field, two coral red lozenge medallions run down the center, each holding a dark plum figure at its core. Cream hooks curl at the top, and small orange blossoms and long thin stems with tiny flowers climb the sides. The drawing is angular, with the lozenges stacked one above the other in place of a single center. A wide coral red main border frames the field, carrying graceful dark rosettes and curling vines in navy and brown. Narrow guard stripes in tan and olive edge it on both sides. The pile is full everywhere, and the lines stay sharp. It holds a strong contrast between the cool blue ground and the warm red frame. At 3'7" by 7'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. These are working rugs rather than showpieces. This runner keeps the angular drawing and the dark ground. In the wide border, a vine curls around the whole frame instead of staying purely geometric.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
