About this rug

Stepped medallions repeat in a continuous column down this lovely rug. On a faded red field, a column of splendid stepped medallions runs down the length in a continuous repeat. Each one holds a pink and cream drawing around a navy core, with small teal and pink forms set beside it. The deep red main border carries navy scrolls and small rosettes in pink and cream. Narrow guard stripes in cream hold a chain of small diamonds in navy, teal and pink. Low patches of pile run across the center, where the foundation shows pale. Navy accents hold the warm red tones together as this bright geometric line stretches down a hall. At 3'2" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan occupies the northwestern corner of the country. Rather than one style, it holds a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. These rugs were made for houses in a cold region rather than for export catalogs. This runner retains that sharp geometric language, with stepped forms and hooked shapes worked in strong contrast. The medallions repeat along the runner, their patterned centers picked out in navy and pink against the red ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
