Cream arcs and curling teal leaves make this a charming rug. On a faded red field, cream arcs and curling teal leaves repeat in a vertical rhythm, with a small hexagonal figure at the center of each cluster. Pretty slate blue and gold sprigs fill the ground between the clusters, and no medallion gathers the pattern. The main border is ochre, carrying a delicate vine of burgundy and teal blossoms inside narrow slate blue stripes with small red marks. The pile is worn low across most of the field, where the red turns pale pink and the foundation shows widely. A few spots near one edge are worn through. It brings a worn, soft-colored rhythm to a narrow passage. At 2'9" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. North of Heriz in northwestern Persia lies the village district of Gharajeh, also written Karaja. The district’s signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, instead of one centered medallion. The layout suits long formats, so Gharajeh runners are what the district is known for. This runner is not the medallion-column type. Its field is an all-over vine and arc design with a small figure at the center of each cluster, and it keeps the long narrow format.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
