About this rug

Dark indigo cross-shaped medallions alternate with hexagons outlined in tan along this lovely rug. Gorgeous stepped medallions and small geometric motifs cover the rust field in a vertical column. Seven figures run down the center, dark indigo cross-shaped medallions alternating with hexagons outlined in tan, each stepped at the edge. Small crosses and lattice squares in cream and brown float in the open spaces between them. The main border is dark indigo, carrying a repeat of delicate red and pink rosettes. Narrow guard stripes in tan and cream with small marks frame it. The pile is thin across the field, with the rust reading paler and pinker and the foundation showing in places. The dark indigo border frames the field along a narrow passage. At 3'1" by 11'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gharajeh rugs

The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. North of Heriz in northwestern Persia lies the village district of Gharajeh, also written Karaja. The district’s signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, instead of one centered medallion. The layout suits long formats, so Gharajeh runners are what the district is known for. This runner keeps that signature, stacking seven separate figures from end to end. The drawing stays angular, with stepped edges on the medallions and small hooked marks in the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
