A column of geometric medallions in navy, cream and rust runs the length of this charming rug. Over a faded red field, a column of splendid geometric medallions runs the length of the runner. Each medallion takes a different shape, from stepped crosses to hexagons, worked in navy, cream and rust. Large cream hooks step inward from the sides between the central figures. The main border is navy, with olive and brown bands carrying small geometric motifs in rust and cream, and narrow stripes in brown and red frame it. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through widely, while the border keeps more pile. It brings a strong geometric rhythm to a narrow passage. At 3'6" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also written Karaja, is a village district north of Heriz in northwestern Persia. Its signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, rather than a single centered one. That layout suits long formats, and Gharajeh runners are the pieces the district is known for. This runner keeps that signature column of varied medallions down its center. The bold cream hooks stepping into the red field add a sharp contrast to the dense geometric drawing.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
