Slanting rows of small boteh in black and olive fill this charming rug. Worked on a faded red field, small boteh in black and olive repeat in slanting rows down the whole length. There is no central medallion. The main border is gray beige, carrying dainty angular vines and small geometric forms in red and black. A narrow guard stripe of navy triangles separates the border from the field. Pile runs low in spots across the field, where white specks of foundation show through. The dense drawing keeps the eye moving down the long red expanse. At 3'2" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
The town of Arak dates only from 1808, when it was founded as Sultanabad, a name the carpet trade kept. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps that all-over field, with the small boteh taking the place of a flower. Its palette stays within red, gray beige and black.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
