About this rug

A grid of square panels makes this a wonderful rug. A grid of square panels holds stepped trees, vases and flower heads, most of the squares red, burgundy or navy and a few cream. They are worked in deep red, burgundy and navy, some on a red ground and some on cream. No medallion gathers the pattern; the garden compartments repeat down the whole length instead. A gorgeous near-black main border frames the grid, set with small cream and red crosses, and narrow dark bands of tiny crosses also divide the panels. The pile is full across the panels. Laid along a passage, the cream panels lighten the deep red and navy. At 3' by 9', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari are divided into two main groups, the Chahar Lang, or Four Legs, and the Haft Lang, or Seven Legs. In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari weaving comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, and its signature is the garden panel. The field is divided into a grid of compartments, each one holding its own tree, vase or flowering plant. This runner keeps that grid intact, with every square carrying a different plant or geometric motif. The weavers were people who moved their herds twice a year. Red and navy stand out against cream in a few of the compartments, and the dark cross border holds the busy panels in a steady frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
