About this rug

Geometric rosettes in dark blue, deep red and brown repeat across this charming rug. Worked on a cream-tan field, lovely geometric rosettes and hooked forms repeat in dark blue, deep red and brown. The layout is an all-over pattern, and no medallion sits at the center, with a vertical column of star shapes among sharp angular motifs, and no corner pieces frame it. The wide main border is burgundy, set with delicate dark blue rosettes and small geometric figures in deep red, and narrow red and black checks run along both sides. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through in small patches across the middle. It holds a narrow passage together, letting the dark blue and deep red motifs stand out against the lighter ground. At 3'3" by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. The rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields rather than a single dominant medallion, and a palette built on madder red and indigo. This runner keeps that repeating field structure, stretching the floral and geometric motifs down the full length without a central focus. Unlike the curvilinear style often seen in Ferdos rugs, this piece favors sharper, stepped outlines and angular stars for a more geometric character.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
