About this rug

Stepped hexagonal medallions form a chain down this lovely runner. Across a camel field, a chain of stepped hexagonal medallions in near-black and wine red runs down the center. Each one holds a diamond core in tan or red, with angular figures branching from its edges. Small red corner pieces with blue-edged arched cores sit at the corners of the field. Bands of red, steel blue and burgundy surround the field in turn. The red carries dainty camel vine scrolls, the blue small red rosettes, and the outer burgundy band camel hooked leaves. Fine black stripes dotted with cream separate each band. Pile runs low in spots over the field, where the foundation shows. The dense drawing brings weight to the camel ground, balancing the wine red and near-black forms against the open space. At 3'9" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This piece reflects that geometric nature in its stacked hexagonal medallions and angular outlines. The camel ground and the near-black and red figures define the long composition.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
