About this rug

Hexagonal medallions in deep red run down the center of this amazing rug. Across a cream field, three large stepped hexagonal medallions in deep red run down the center, linked by smaller diamond shapes. The medallion cores hold geometric motifs in navy and orange against the light ground. Deep red fills the space around the central column, scattered with small cream and navy geometric figures. A gorgeous cream main border carries a chain of square lattice boxes and small flowers in red and navy. Narrow stripes of dark red set with tiny diamonds frame the border on both sides. The pile is full. The dense drawing of stepped lines and sharp angles gives the runner a strong graphic rhythm in red and cream. At 3'5" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds a 16th-century carpet from the shrine of Shaikh Safi at Ardabil, the dynastic shrine of the Safavid shahs. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Long formats and runners are common. This piece keeps that geometric character, with the stepped hexagons and angular hooks set hard against the cream ground. The deep red hexagons stand clearly out from the light central ground. Instead of the hooked borders often seen in the district, this rug uses a square lattice grid to frame the bold central column.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
