About this rug

Three red hexagon medallions give this rug a wonderful look. The cream field holds scattered red and slate blue flower forms. Three beautiful red hexagon medallions run down the center, each holding a slate blue band around a small cream and red core. The deep red border carries a chain of cream and brown motifs. Narrow bands of slate blue and ivory zigzags edge the border on either side. The pile is full over the face, keeping every hue distinct. It anchors a tight corridor, where the bright ground lets the red notes stand out. At 2'11" by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This runner shows that angular drawing in its three hexagon medallions, with bold flower forms filling the open cream ground between them. A deep red border frames the whole.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
