Large floral sprays spread along a cream field in this charming rug. Four large floral sprays in muted pink, faded red and steel blue run down the cream field. There is no single medallion; the bouquets repeat along the runner instead. Fine navy arabesque scrolls fill the corners of the field and the spaces between the bouquets. A beautiful tan main border holds small plum blossoms and cream leaves, edged by narrow guard stripes of diagonal navy and gold lines. The pile is full, with only small pale flecks in the cream. The pale ground keeps the pink and blue notes light for a passage. At 2'7" by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Nain rugs
Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, with ivory grounds, soft blue and closely worked vines. This runner keeps that pale ground and the fine vine drawing, with the steel blue outlines sharp against the cream. The muted pink and faded red in the flower heads add warmth to the cool blue and ivory palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
