About this rug

This lovely rug repeats brown diamonds and hooked shapes down its tan field. On a tan field, brown diamonds, hooked shapes and small lattice squares repeat down the length, with touches of pale blue. There is no medallion; rows of hooked and checked figures run from end to end. A brown zigzag edge closes each end of the field. The beautiful main border is tan, carrying hooked brown figures set between small squares and dots. A narrow brown guard stripe of small leaf shapes runs along the field on either side. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the tan, brown and pale blue to one warmth. Across the middle, the drawing fades to a pale band. In a narrow passage, the tan ground lets the brown pattern stay clear. At 3' by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece keeps that long shape, with its hooked figures set in rows down the length and no center to gather them. Tan and brown stay close in tone, and a few small pale blue touches lift the pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
