The deeper gray brown border is set with light blue cartouches on this charming rug. The gray brown field holds a dense lattice of geometric figures and small rosettes in tan, cream and pale blue, cut at the corners into an octagon. A small diamond medallion sits near the middle, with similar shapes running down the length. The main border is a deeper gray brown, set with graceful cream flower heads and light blue cartouches. Thin bands in tan and pale blue zigzag beside this wide frame. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the rug to one warm level. The pile is low across the whole face, with small flecks showing the foundation. The pale tones keep the drawing legible in a passage. At 3'5" by 9'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with a dense lattice along the whole length. The wash leaves the brown and tan at one even warmth, in place of the strong contrast the district often shows.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
