About this rug

Seven linked hexagonal medallions stand in a column on this charming rug. A gray brown field displays a column of seven linked hexagonal medallions outlined in cream and filled with dark brown geometric shapes. Small stepped motifs float in the open spaces between these central forms. Small hooks curl along the edges of each medallion. The gorgeous main border runs dark brown with cream geometric figures, framed by narrow guard stripes of diagonal lines and small crosses. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. Pile runs low in streaks across the face, and the foundation shows in small patches. The brown tones stay soft along a passage. At 3'10" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and the rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds appear in the field. This runner keeps that geometric drawing in its linked diamonds and stepped hooks. The layout follows the column strictly, with no animals visible in the field, relying on the rhythm of the shapes alone.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
