About this rug

Diamond shapes and hooked vines repeat in an all-over plan on this amazing runner. Gray brown fills the field, which holds a tight lattice of dark brown geometric shapes and small cream rosettes. No single medallion holds the center; instead, diamond shapes and hooked vines repeat down the length in an all-over plan. Small touches of pale blue and sage green sit inside the motifs, cooling the warm earth tones. The handsome main border runs gray beige, set with charming dark brown stylized leaves and flower heads that march along the sides. Narrow guard stripes in dark brown carry tiny cream blossoms, framing the lighter band on both edges. Full pile covers the field and every border. Brown and cream drawing stretches out in a long line across the runner. At 3'7" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses. This runner keeps that long format, with a geometric lattice repeating down the whole field. Its palette stays close to the earth, mixing gray brown and dark brown with small notes of pale blue and sage green in the drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
