About this rug

Pale gray beige flower heads and hooked leaves repeat down the length of this charming rug. Worked on a gray brown field, delicate pale gray beige flower heads and hooked leaves repeat down the length, with patches of pale blue showing among them. A line of larger rosettes runs down the middle on a thin stem, in place of a medallion. No corner pieces break the all-over layout, which carries to both ends of the runner. A narrow main border on a tan ground carries fine brown lines and small diamonds, with thin brown and blue lines beside it. The colors are softened by a light antique wash that stops short of the drawing, and fine white specks show through the pile in places. It anchors a narrow passage, the pale blue patches cooling the warm brown. At 2'7" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Borujerd rugs

Borujerd lies in Lorestan, the home of the Luristan Bronzes, which date from the turbulent years of about 700 to 625 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found most people of Borujerd farming, and only a small part weaving, encouraged by the prices of the Sultanabad rug trade. Borujerd sits in the Zagros foothills of western Persia, in Lorestan, and the weaving carries both village and tribal character. The drawing is geometric and a little loose. This runner shows that in its hooked leaves and the small notched blocks set beside the stem of rosettes. The gray brown field holds the eye, with pale blue patches and brown lines picking out the drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
