About this rug

Lobed medallions in soft blue and brown run down the muted pink field of this delightful rug. Set within a muted pink field, three large lobed medallions repeat down the length in soft blue and brown. Two hold stepped geometric cores, the faded blue one near the lower end has an open center, and dainty sprays of small blossoms float in the open space between them. Large spandrels at the four corners carry lovely curling vines and flower heads that match the central drawing. The main border is pale rose, carrying a row of small rosettes and cross shapes in brown. A narrow guard stripe with a zigzag line frames this band on either side. Pile stands even across the face, keeping every line of the pattern clear. It grounds a long passage, and the pale blue notes cool the soft pink. At 2'7" by 11'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

Tabriz weavers tie their knots with a small hooked knife instead of their fingers, and have been timed at faster than one knot a second. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. Its workshops used a wider palette than most, so ivory, stone and pale blue grounds appear alongside the reds. This runner keeps that planned layout, with the three medallions spaced at regular intervals down the field. The muted pink ground and soft blue accents show that wider palette at work.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
