About this rug

Separate medallions set in green run the length of this charming rug. Across a cream field, a column of separate medallions runs the length, each set in green with a core of red, cream or brown. Hexagons alternate with lovely round florals, and small flowers fill the green between them. The main border is red, carrying delicate blue and gold rosettes and angular brown and blue figures. Narrow guard stripes in olive and red edge it. The pile is worn low across much of the field, and the foundation shows in white patches, widest on the right side near the middle. It grounds a narrow passage, with the green medallions standing out against the cream. At 2'7" by 12'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Gharajeh rugs

The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also written Karaja, is a village district north of Heriz in northwestern Persia. Its signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape. This runner keeps that column, with hexagons and round florals alternating down the length. The border is red with blue and gold rosettes, and green runs through every medallion.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
