A tight web of scrolling vines and rosettes makes this a charming rug. Worked on a gray brown field, lovely scrolling vines and rosettes form a tight web of dark brown. No single medallion anchors the design; the floral pattern fills the entire ground. A full antique wash has left no color at strength. The pile is worn low across the face, and the foundation shows through. It brings earth tones to a hallway. At 2'4" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Birjand rugs
The Textile Museum in Washington names Sabzevar, Herat, Mashhad and Dorokhsh among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Khorasan has its classic carpets in those of Herat, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In South Khorasan in eastern Persia, Birjand is the main weaving town, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Designs often follow a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines. This runner carries a repeating floral lattice in its scrolling vines and rosettes. The washed gray brown tone suits the soft palette of the region.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
