A lattice of brown vines and rosettes repeats across this charming runner. At the center, a lattice of lovely brown vines and rosettes repeats across a muted pink field. The all-over plan sets diamond frames down the length, each holding small flower heads in pale tones. No corner spandrels break the pattern at the ends. A narrow brown border carries a simple scroll, edged by a guard stripe of tiny pale blue triangles. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the whole runner to one warm level. The pile is full. The brown drawing stands out gently against the pale ground, making this runner a warm choice for a passage. At 2'6" by 8'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This runner keeps that soft palette, with brown drawing laid over a muted pink ground. The lattice is closely worked, repeating in diamond frames from one end to the other. The pale blue guard stripe at the edge adds the one cool note.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
