Three large medallions stand on the faded red field of this charming rug. Small cream rosettes and olive vines cover the faded red field, scattered between three large medallions. A central cream diamond holds a red core, while lobed slate blue medallions sit at either end with pendants reaching outward. Cream corners carry dainty dark brown vine scrolls. No main border survives along the long sides, only a thin dark edge, and the cream corners run straight out to it. A few patches have worn low over the red ground, exposing the weave underneath. In a narrow passage, the cream centers break up the long red run. At 2'7" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Tabriz rugs
Isma’il, the first Safavid shah, was crowned in Tabriz in 1501. Tabriz stood for a long period on the great caravan routes to Trebizond and Tiflis, and became the principal market of Persia for the export of rugs. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This runner keeps that planned drawing in its column of three medallions and the scrolling vines that fill the red ground. Its workshops used a wider palette than most, and the cream medallions and slate blue ends here show that range.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
