Small boteh motifs repeat in a dense grid over this charming rug. Over a faded red field, rows of small boteh motifs repeat in a dense grid along the length. Each teardrop shape holds navy and olive marks inside, with tiny cream accents filling the gaps between the figures. The drawing runs out to the sides on every edge, with no corner pieces. The main border is steel blue, carrying small flowers and squares in cream and rust. A thin band of camel and navy separates it from the field. The pile is low in places across the orange field, where the weave shows, and the borders are fuller. It grounds the warm red and cool blue into a steady rhythm for a hallway. At 2'8" by 8'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Botteh rugs
The boteh, mostly known now as the paisley, is an ancient Persian design based on the tree of life and inspired by buds, cones and palm fronds. Botteh is a motif, the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. The boteh is the organizing figure of rugs cataloged this way, repeated across the field in rows. This runner keeps that exact repetition, with the same small shape placed one after another down the runner. It appears everywhere from the tribal south to the city workshops of the center. Here the drawing is tight and geometric, reading as a textured red ground from a distance rather than a field of separate leaves.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
