About this rug

A column of diamond medallions on a camel field makes this a charming rug. Across a camel field, a column of diamond medallions runs the length of the runner. Their centers alternate between red and cream, each worked with near-black geometric motifs. Small hooked shapes, red lozenges and tiny stylized birds scatter across the open ground between the large diamonds. The main border is near-black, carrying a repeat of small red triangles. A fine red line runs inside it. Full pile covers most of the face, with a few tiny low spots. The warm camel ground prevents the red medallions from looking heavy along a narrow passage. At 2'1" by 9', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. They spent the winter near sea level on the Moghan steppe and the summer about 160 kilometers south, in the high pastures of the Savalan range. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region, not for export catalogs. This runner uses that angular vocabulary, with diamond medallions edged in hooks along the whole length. The camel ground leaves room for the red and near-black drawing to be seen from a distance.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
