A column of four lobed medallions sits in the powder blue field of this lovely rug. A powder blue field holds a column of four lobed medallions, each with a red core. Two have cream grounds and two have navy, and each is flanked by small cross-shaped motifs in red and pink. A small red and navy tip sits above and below each medallion. The handsome main border is red, carrying a scroll of pink and cream blossoms along the length. Narrow guard stripes in navy and red line the border on each side. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the blue ground, and white foundation shows in spots. It holds the cool blue and warm red in balance along a narrow path. At 2'11" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mashhad rugs
Imam Riza, the eighth Shi’ite imam, is buried at Mashhad, and the city is a great destination of pilgrims. In 1877 the Qajar shah gave London’s South Kensington Museum 14 carpets chosen by his ministers to represent the best being woven, one of them made in Mashhad. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This runner takes the red into its border and medallions and sets them on a powder blue ground. The medallions follow one another down the length, each with its small cross-shaped motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
