Two large stepped ochre medallions make this a charming rug. Two large stepped ochre medallions sit on a muted pink field, each holding a pink core with cream centers and small cross shapes. Handsome charcoal spandrels at the top and bottom carry vertical stems and small cream flowers. The main border is gray, filled with a dense lattice of cream, pink and olive shapes. Narrow guard stripes in cream and pink, with a fine zigzag, run along its inner edge. The drawing stays sharp under a light antique wash that has eased the colors. Low spots show across the field and the medallions. The ochre and soft pink keep the charcoal ends from looking heavy in a narrow passage. At 3'9" by 8'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Anatolian rugs
The carpets called “Holbein” were woven in Anatolia as early as the 14th century and became popular in Europe from the 15th century on. So many western Anatolian carpets shipped to Europe in the 1600s and 1700s were given to churches in Romania and Hungary that they became known as “Transylvanian” carpets. Anatolian is the broad name for the village weaving of the Turkish interior, and it covers a lot of ground. The shared character is geometry over floral drawing, and a palette that reads warmer and chalkier than Persian work. This runner keeps that strict geometry in its stepped medallions and lattice border. Muted pink and ochre share a warm, chalky range. These were house rugs, woven to be used.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
