This charming runner has two long hexagonal panels that hold small medallions. Two long hexagonal panels run down the tan field, each holding small medallions with rust and near-black cores. Fine diagonal lines fill the ground between the figures. Red panels with small motifs sit at the top and bottom ends, framing the central design. A handsome brown main border carries angular forms in cream and dark brown, with narrow guard stripes of zigzag lines on both sides. The pile is worn low across the field, and the foundation shows through in many places. At 2'1" by 7'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The drawing on this rug is geometric, built from straight lines and angular forms rather than curving vines. Two long hexagonal panels fill the layout, set against fine diagonal hatching. The palette stays within earth tones, mixing tan, brown and rust with small accents of near-black.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
