This amazing rug has three stepped diamond medallions in dark brown on a cream field. Worked on a cream field, three handsome stepped diamond medallions run down the center in dark brown and gray brown. Small sprigs in gold and sage fill the open ground between the central figures. The main border is gray brown, carrying a row of linked oval shapes in gold, sage and brown. Narrow guard stripes edge the border on both sides. The pile is full on every part of the rug. Gold and sage lighten the dark brown drawing across this geometric layout. At 2'2" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Torkaman weavers work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This piece keeps that strict grid in its column of three diamond medallions. Gray brown, cream and touches of gold and sage make up the whole palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
