Thin lines link the shapes into a handsome strict lattice that covers the ground from top to bottom. The main border is deep red, carrying a row of small geometric motifs in navy, ochre and cream. Narrow guard stripes with tiny cross marks in red and blue run along the inner and outer edges. Full pile covers the entire surface. It brings a sharp geometric rhythm to a small spot, where the bright cream ground lifts the heavy red frame. At 2'4" by 3', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that repeating habit in its rows of hooked diamonds. The cream field sets the deep red and navy drawing apart, leaving the geometric figures clear against the pale ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
