About this rug

Two stepped diamonds in orange and plum sit on the gold field of this remarkable rug. The gold field holds two large stepped diamonds in orange and plum. Plum hooked lines outline these central forms against the warm yellow ground, with small powder blue accents inside. A cream border carries rows of beautiful multicolored guls in red, teal and gold. Narrow guard stripes in deep red and near-black frame the main band on both sides. Full pile covers the whole face. It suits a bright entry where the orange centers catch the light. At 2'1" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid in its border while placing two large diamonds in the center. The gold ground carries the orange and plum figures with a warm glow.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
