Rust sprigs are scattered around a stepped diamond medallion on this wonderful rug. The field is beige, scattered with small rust sprigs around a central figure. The medallion is a beautiful stepped diamond in rust with a near-black octagonal core holding navy and ochre marks. Splendid ochre zigzag corner pieces sit at the four corners of the field. A cream frame carries rows of ochre and rust geometric shapes, lined by narrow bands of tiny navy dots. The pile is full throughout, so every motif reads cleanly. Warm rust and ochre stand out against the pale ground of this small entry rug. At 2' by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, and it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps one octagonal figure at the center, set within a stepped diamond rather than a full grid. Rust and ochre bring the heat against the beige.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
