Stepped deep red motifs sit in a column on this delightful rug. Set in a brown field, a column of stepped deep red motifs holds small green and brown rosettes within each compartment. The drawing forms a splendid central panel rather than a single medallion, with the geometric shapes repeating down the length. A wide border on a cream ground carries rows of small rust diamonds and dark blue geometric figures. Narrow guard stripes with tiny repeating patterns edge the main border on every side. The pile is full over the face and in the borders. The warm red notes stand out against the brown ground, and the rug fits a small space. At 2'2" by 3'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The name Bukhara was given to Turkmen rugs in error in the first half of the 20th century, though few Turkmen live around that city. UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that repeated geometric structure, with the stepped forms arranged in a column down the center. The palette shifts between the rust of the border and the deep red of the central drawing, set against the brown ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
