Striped bars link two hexagonal medallions on the gray ground of this remarkable rug. At the center, two beautiful hexagonal medallions in deep red and cream sit on a gray field, linked by striped bars. Small hooked shapes flank the central column on the gray ground. A wide gray-blue border carries rows of splendid diamond guls in navy, gold and pale green, between narrower cream bands. Narrow guard stripes in deep red and navy edge this band on both sides. Full pile covers the face and borders. Red figures warm the cool gray ground, giving this geometric piece a bright presence. At 1'10" by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
UNESCO added traditional Turkmen carpet making to its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This piece holds that rigid structure along its edge, where the diamond shapes repeat without change. The field holds a cool gray tone, set against the warm red of the central medallions.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
