A dense herati lattice in navy and burgundy fills this delightful rug. The dusty rose field carries a dense herati lattice, the fish-and-leaf pattern worked in navy and burgundy with charming cream rosettes. There is no central medallion, only the repeating diamond grid that fills the rug from edge to edge. A narrow navy border runs around the field, set with small cream and pink flower heads. All of the pile, border included, is full. The warm rose ground lightens the navy drawing, making this piece fit well in a small space. At 2' by 2'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Bijar rugs
Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, placed Bijar a hundred miles beyond Hamedan on the road to Tabriz. Bijar weavers made a remarkable number of vagirehs, sample pieces showing portions of several patterns and borders, used as models for large carpets. Bijar in Kurdistan has long been called the iron rug of Persia. This rug carries a tight repeat of diamonds and rosettes across the whole face. The dusty rose ground sets the navy and burgundy drawing in a warm light, and the small scale of the repeat suits the short length of the piece.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
