A diamond medallion in cream and blue sits at the middle of this delightful rug. Dusty rose carries the field, crowded with small rosettes and floral sprays in brown, cream and touches of steel blue. A gorgeous diamond medallion sits at the middle, worked in cream and blue. Cream spandrels fill the four corners, each holding a curved motif in rust and blue. The border is gray beige, with a simple repeat of dark brown marks. The pile is full across the field. It anchors a small entry or reading nook, letting the rose ground warm the floor. At 1'8" by 2'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This piece pairs a central medallion with corner spandrels on a busy field. The dusty rose ground and gray beige border keep the palette restrained, while small blue accents pick out shapes within each figure.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
