2809 · 1'8" x 2'9" Persian Hamadan Accent Rug
An ivory field worked through with deep red, magenta, sage and light brown. Hand-knotted in Hamadan, Iran, in the 1970s. The pile is low, which keeps the pattern crisp and the rug easy to live with. At 1'8" x 2'9" it is an accent size: a bedside, an entry, or the space in front of a chair.
Hamadan in western Iran is one of the oldest continuously weaving regions in the country, and hundreds of villages around the city have been sending rugs to its markets for generations. Most are single-wefted, which gives a firm, flat handle that wears extremely well. Long narrow formats are a Hamadan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colours softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
