Open cream ground surrounds the deep red medallion of this remarkable rug. A stepped deep red medallion sits at the center of a cream ground, its hexagon core worked in near-black, orange and cream with small cross motifs above and below. Delicate brown leaves and red rosettes climb near-black vines across the open cream space. The main border is near-black, carrying a zigzag line and small red blossoms, closed by a narrow deep red guard stripe. The pile is full. The cream ground lightens the heavy reds, so this piece works beside a chair or in an entry. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This rug keeps that village character in its bold geometric medallion and the strong contrast between the near-black border and the light field. The floral vines filling the cream space soften the hard lines of the central red shape.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
