About this rug

A single diamond medallion stands alone on the open field of this delightful rug. A single diamond medallion sits on the cream field, with open space around it. The medallion has a blue outline and a red center with olive leaves, and small pendants sit at its top and bottom. A red main border carries pretty flower heads in pink, blue, teal and gold, linked by a thin vine. Narrow guard stripes in navy and teal frame the red band. The pile is full across the face and in the borders. It brings a bright geometric note to a small floor space, balancing the heavy red frame with the open cream center. At 2' by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This piece keeps the bold geometric drawing and the strong red and cream contrast found in the region’s work. The layout places a single diamond medallion within a wide, flower-filled border rather than a long repeat.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
