The diamond medallion of this wonderful rug holds a gray and cream rosette core. Charming rose blossoms and curling deep red vines sit on the cream field. A large diamond medallion sits at the center, its deep red ground holding a gray and cream rosette core. Small red pendants extend from the top and bottom points of the central shape. The main border is burgundy. Full pile covers the surface and keeps the pattern crisp. In a small space, the bright rose and deep red warm the cream ground. At 1'8" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
A shrine in Hamedan long called the tomb of Esther is, by Britannica’s account, the tomb of Queen Shushandukht, wife of the Sasanian king Yazdegerd I. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This accent rug pairs a bold medallion with a scatter of flowers. The deep red diamond stands out clearly against the cream field, set off by the burgundy edge.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
